As Arctic ice thins, the Quebec Inuit should use dogsleds rather than snowmobiles, a researcher suggests. He says the dogs can sense thin ice and could help rescue their owner in case of a fall into chilly water.
The idea is intriguing. But it will require careful consideration of the two modes of transportation. Here are a few ways snowmobiles match up against sled dogs.
Snowmobile: Never comes when called.
Dog: Usually comes, unless busy eating your boots.
Snowmobile: Stinky exhaust can lead to global warming.
Dog: Stinky waste includes yellow snow.
Snowmobile: Cold, metal exterior.
Dog: Soft, fluffy fur, although sometimes stinky.
Snowmobile: Sleeps quietly in the garage.
Dog: Wants to sleep on your bed. Especially on a three-dog night.
Snowmobile: Runs on costly fossil fuels.
Dog: Runs on kibbles and table scraps.
