I couldn’t agree more that the problem with U.S. 2 is the people, as a July 8 letter stated. Having said that, I would like to point out that the posted speed limit from mile marker 31.5 east is 60 mph. This highway was designed for that speed, it is clearly evident the way the curves are banked.
The writer described traveling over Stevens Pass at 70 mph. That would be an extraordinary event. I have been a resident of the Sky Valley for 17 years, and I commute on U.S. 2 five days a week. In that time I have found it to be an extraordinary event to be able to travel at the posted speed limit of 60 mph. Why? Because of drivers incapable of traveling at the speed limit. Perhaps they are unaware of the speed limit, as there are only three 60 mph speed limit signs for a stretch of 15 miles, with side roads.
Another unusual event is a slow-moving vehicle with dozens of other vehicles stacked up behind it, actually pulling over to let others by. Many of my neighbors have dealt with this traffic hazard and feel the same way — if you can’t travel at the speed limit, pull over and let others pass.
And as far as traffic laws go, how many tickets for a delay of five or more vehicles have been written in the last five years on this stretch of U.S. 2?
