Small investment for priceless gain

We must support our schools by passing the Lake Stevens School bond measure on Feb. 8!

In the coming weeks, you’ll hear and see a tremendous amount of support for our schools and for the bond measure. But you’ll also see some individuals opposing it, arguing that we can’t afford another tax, another increase, another bond. And they’ll tell you it’s because the economy is too bad, the cost is too high, the district too wasteful.

While they are entitled to their opinion, so am I to mine. And my opinion is this:

* There’s not a pot of money behind every bureaucracy, waiting around to be found by some auditor.

* When we fail to educate, we increase the need to incarcerate – a far more expensive and costly alternative.

* Investing in education is not like discount shopping – you can’t buy more with less.

* I can empathize with the opposition’s points, as I recently became a first-time homebuyer, recently started a new business and don’t even have kids in the school system. But I am still willing to make my contribution to such an important part of our community.

On Feb. 8 we have the opportunity to support a bond measure that will significantly solve the overcrowding problem in our schools, building a new eighth- and ninth-grade middle school and modernizing our three oldest elementary schools, Mt. Pilchuck, Sunnycrest and Hillcrest, which range in age from 30 to 50 years.

A quality education is priceless. And your contribution of $7.50 a month (on a $250,000 home) is a small investment in such a critical part of our community.
