Regarding the June 21 article, “Only you can prevent forest fires”:
One thing missed in the article was the smoker. Drive down the road any time it isn’t raining and see how many smokers have their window down, flicking their ashes and when they’re done and flicking the lit cigarette out of the car.
How many brush fires have the fire departments had to respond to?
Every response puts our firefighters at risk no matter how large or small, disrupts traffic, costs the taxpayers and ties up fire fighting equipment.
I have fought many forest fires in California, Arizona, Alaska, Utah and New Mexico that were started by cigarettes. The costs are in the millions both in dollars and trees.
Is it too much to ask for people to use the ashtrays and save money and our forests?
