I read on Friday that the Sno-Isle Regional Library system has decided to filter all Internet services for children. We should applaud the Sno-Isle board of directors for their courageous decision. During public hearings a year or two ago, I was amazed that there were many in the community who believe that our library must provide free, unfiltered access to pornography and other seriously objectionable content, even to children.
Libraries routinely select which of many materials to offer to the public, from books and magazines to videos and Internet content. Pornography is readily available in the community, so there has never been any legitimate reason why the libraries should feel obliged to offer free access to pornography on its computers. With very effective modern filters available, I’m glad to see the board making a wise decision not to offer pornography to children in our libraries.
