While I appreciate Doug Trotter’s desire to praise a positive decision (that of Sno-Isle to filter all Internet services for children) I cannot go so far as to applaud the directors “for their courageous decision,” (“Library filters: Sno-Isle board deserves applause,” Dec. 30).
This decision was not made from a moral position in defense of our children. Otherwise it would have been made without hesitation when the issue was raised, or even earlier, when the problem and the technology to fix it were evident. In fact, if we’re praising courage, it would be more appropriate to praise the Everett Library board for standing by its moral convictions by turning down federal funding rather than caving on the issue of censorship. No, the decision to shield our children from Internet porn was a financial one, made simply because money was at stake. How scary is that?
