Snohomish mayoral race: Responding to Guzak’s letter

Regarding Karen Guzak’s Oct. 2 letter to the editor, Mrs. Guzak tries to make 3 points:

1. Her partner, Warner Blake, is not involved with the Carnegie Foundation. Mr. Blake has written several guest commentaries in the Herald and Snohomish Tribune promoting the Foundation’s plans. His last Herald letter was on Aug. 29th.

2. She questions the $5 million cost estimate to implement the 2011 Carnegie Master Plan that was again approved by the city council in the June 20 workshop. She claims the cost is “undetermined”; however, the city’s Carnegie project manager, Denise Johns, reported to me the 2011 Master Plan’s original cost estimate has increased from $4 million to $5 million now. Besides, how in the world can you approve a major project and not have an idea of the cost?

3. She implies she is in favor of placing a methadone clinic in Snohomish. However, in a candidate forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters just prior to the Aug. 1 primary election, when asked if she supported placing a methadone clinic in Snohomish, she answered “No.” You can confirm this with the League.

Finally, Mrs. Guzak skips the main thrust of Bill Betten’s letter, namely, John Kartak was unfairly smeared as linked to the alt-right by one of her supporters.
