I am confused by the Herald’s editorial and news position on the Tulalip Casino. The editorial of June 6 states that gambling at the college coach level is bad, but that of June 5 states that the casino can be incorporated into a family outing. Apparently some gambling is unacceptable, for good social reasons, but it is OK for parents to blow their cookie money in professional gambling and to encourage their offspring to do the same.
The editorial of June 5 states that the casino had off-reservation benefits but really doesn’t enumerate any, unless you consider incorporation of the casino into a family outing such a benefit. Money that goes into the casino comes from somewhere else, at someone else’s expense. Money is obviously siphoned from tax producing activities off the reservation to tax-free activities on the reservation. Social hardships and expenses, both private and public off the reservation, are increased by gambling activities. I doubt if Boeing considers a “Las Vegas style casino” a social benefit for its employees or included it in its “want list” to the city, state and county.
