In regard to the letter concerning people standing on the street corner holding a cardboard sign asking for money (“Panhandlers are honest about need”):
I know some people are in need, but of those that are hurting I would bet only a fraction of 1 percent stand on a street corner and hold up a sign begging for money. The people I pass by are the same ones every day. In my opinion they are professional panhandlers that have found that it’s more profitable asking for a handout than working for a living.
Think about it: They pay no income tax or Social Security. What they receive is all profit with no withholding of any kind. I’m convinced at the end of the day they go to the bank laughing.
