In a letter to The Herald, Ray Dorbolo accuses Jane Fonda of passing a note from a prisoner of war to the Viet Cong (“How do we define a traitor?” April 14).
The story is an urban legend, evidence of gullibility at best and malice at worst. I haven’t heard a single Democrat mention Jane Fonda in recent years, and Fonda herself has expressed regret for her trip to Vietnam.
But it seems that some Republicans who lack morals have been trying to unfairly associate current Democratic candidates with Fonda’s past activism, going as far as doctoring a photo to put John Kerry and Fonda in the same frame. Kerry was also accused, unfairly, of claiming all veterans were war criminals. In fact, the war crimes he testified about were similar to those that are on record as having happened at My Lai, and Kerry never accused veterans in general of criminal behavior.
Both the Fonda myth and the Kerry accusations are slanderous and contradict repeated references to Christian values by Republicans. A party that uses the name of God to justify its politics had better uphold a Biblical standard of honesty and fairness, or it will have to answer to a higher power than the Democratic Party.
