President Obama’s move to continue feeding the Afghanistan war, which has become a flesh-devouring beast, gorging itself on human lives, has sent the wrong message to the American people.
Iraq is on fire with civil disorder and violence, they’re wading in the pools of blood of their own people. The president wants us to continue withdrawing, leaving Iraq with more unrest, chaos and death than was the case before we got there! Apparently, Obama doesn’t mind leaving the Iraqi people to clean up the mess we helped them make.
Iraq is self-destructing; let’s examine Afghanistan. To turn the war around, at least five things must happen.
1.) Along the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan, we need to deploy small units (4 to 5 men) in “the caves” region we have heard so much about. They could jump in from a high altitude at night, avoiding detection and set up patrols or construct sniper bunkers by daybreak. Aerial reconnaissance satellites could pinpoint their targets beforehand.
2.) Offer bounties/rewards for capturing or killing Taliban leaders.
3.) Offer other compensation like food, water, clothing, ammo, etc.
4.) Compel village elders to form councils/militias to repel Taliban. Help them build and fortify their villages. Leave townspeople with a battle plan to implement the next time the Taliban stroll into town, as well as alternative plans, depending on how situations develop.
5.) Retired Marine, now national security adviser, James Jones, stated that “reconciliation” and “reintegration” might be possible for the Taliban, but not until July of 2011. The wheels to get this process going need to start rolling now. In the long run, without political interactions between the warring factions involved, this war will never end, and peace will never come to Afghanistan.
