In the competitive office-supply business, retailers work creatively to gain any competitive edge. A particularly innovative example, by Staples, deserves kudos for managing to benefit not only the chain and its customers, but the environment and local schools.
Through May 8, customers can bring used computers, monitors and laptops — old equipment that’s just piling up in the garage — to Staples stores in Washington and Oregon for recycling. The customer pays a $10 fee, which is donated to the school district of their choice, and in return receives a coupon good for $10 off a purchase of $40 or more.
Some folks may be unaware that it’s illegal to dump computers and monitors in the trash because they can contain toxic materials. Others may violate the law intentionally to avoid paying a recycling fee at county transfer stations.
Staples’ program makes it a financial wash for customers who take advantage of the coupon, and helps local schools to boot. It’s a win-win idea other marketers should emulate.
