As we begin the new school year, I want to acknowledge the many fine efforts on the part of the Mukilteo School District and the Mukilteo Education Association for the many hours they put in to negotiate a contract that enables us to begin the school year on time. These are not easy times for public education, and we cannot take our teachers and our other employees for granted given the high expectations we are placing on our students for academic achievement.
Everyday, MSD employees go to work with one thing in mind – how can I best do my job to help the children in our schools? The bus drivers set the tone by greeting children each morning and setting expectations for behavior in transit to school. The principal at a school equally sets the tone for students and teachers. During the course of the day, a student may encounter food service workers, custodians, reading specialists, librarians, coaches, classroom paraprofessionals and numerous other adults who are there to make a difference.
It is important for us, as a school community, to realize that we are fortunate to have the support we do for a strong and effective educational system. This type of support cannot be taken for granted. I want to encourage residents to visit our schools and see what’s happening for students daily in thanks to the many fine people who work in this district and have committed themselves to the future of our children and, ultimately, society.
