State cuts wrong on every level

Excellent guest commetary on Sunday by Nancy Clark of Compass Health on the incredibly bad judgment of our people in Olympia in addressing out state’s budget problems with huge cuts in mental health care. (“Short-sighted cuts harm our community, cost us all more.”)

I think the comments apply quite aptly to the massive raid on all of our state’s human services. Even if they are not among us bleeding hearts who think that this constitutes an inexcusable breach of our moral obligation to our fellow human beings, how can they possibly think this solves anything? Are they really stupid enough to think these cuts will make these folks somehow magically disappear?

The only magic will be their transfiguration into the person who mugs you or attacks you for no apparent reason, maybe fatally, or trashes your home or car just because their life is trash so why should yours be any better. They will become the enormous crowd between you and the doctor at the emergency room beset by the host of diseases and maladies of poverty and malnutrition, or the one jamming our jails for three hots and a cot.

If we stand still for this government according to the pressure of profiteering lobbyists, we will surely regret our shortsightedness. This is not making tough choices. It’s picking on the weak.
