State driver’s licenses must meet Real ID standards

I agree with the Herald’s “In Our View” Tuesday that it is a important topic for all of Washington’s citizens and residents. I also would rather comply with the Federal Real ID Act than lose the right to my driver’s license as a important document. I would be forced to use a passport just to board local flights at our airports. A passport is very important document and is very costly to replace if lost.

According to recent news articles 163,000 drivers licenses were issued to applicants who did not provide a Social Security numbers. Regardless of the number “this is like a major security breach” in our country according to the federal government. Washington state was one of three states to do this. Since other states had more rigid Real Act guidelines in place this has become a security issue, as one could go to another state and get another driver’s license that has a higher ranking as far as security and with a little forging of a birth certificate and presto “you’re an American.”

Something must be done by Jan. 22, 2018, the deadline given to the state by the federal government. Yes, I would provide the real id criteria if that what it takes, passport, birth certificate or whatever necessary to right this wrong our state has done.

Political partisans should have no play in this as this “its for our good as a country.” To start with the state and its governor have to apologize to the state residents for this oversight, and then let’s get with it.
