In response to Friday’s editorial, “Adopt low-carbon fuel limits,” some very important points are never mentioned, such as Washington state’s actual impact on man-made climate change. Washington’s CO2 emissions are only three-quarters of one-tenth of a percent of the world’s CO2 emissions.
Director of Washington Department of Ecology, Maia Bellon, says that squabbling over price per gallon misses the point but instead it is exactly the issue. Before we pass laws it is the responsibility of our legislative members to weigh the cost compared to the benefit, the change in fuel standards could cost between 2 cents to 20 cents per gallon and will not make an impact on the world’s CO2 emissions. The intrusive changes to the fuel standards will negatively impact our middle class and lower-income neighbors and again will do nothing to limit Washington’s CO2 impacts.
