State senator owes people an apology

After reading The Herald’s short article about the racial slur made by Alex Deccio, a state senator from Yakima, I was appalled. I will not disgrace Alex’s honorable peers by addressing this bigot as senator.

As I thought about Alex’s words I realized his hateful verbal attack hurt many people. It was not only directed at the black race but it was also a slap at our legislative institution, at every person living in our state and it is an attack against the dignity of the state of Washington. The people of our state and the press should pressure the House and Senate into giving this “Un-American” a floor censure. This disgraceful person should be made to use both the radio and television media to make his apology to all of us. Anytime a person, especially a lawmaker, shows his or her hatred for another race, then the people must stand up against that individual and clearly tell the offender we will not stand for any such vicious disregard for the dignity of humankind.

This elected official is supposed to represent all races, creeds, colors and religious affiliates. Since he isn’t doing this, Deccio must be held responsible for his behavior and some strong sanctions should be taken against this lawmaker.
