The current school violence shows we as a society are sick. How much more do we need to tolerate until this nation deals with our emotional health?
Emotional well-being has never been taught in school and it now is a priority. Schools are under fire because of our failure to address emotions. We were trained to tough it out, isolate and hold things in. In doing so we act out on those who are different.
I, for one, am tired of seeing the senseless hate crimes, knowing full well that underneath anger are hurt feelings. We as a society have learned to numb our pain through violence and substances. Children are becoming addicts at a time they should be having fun. Where communication used to take place, it is now replaced with young people paying attention to their phones and avoiding communicating with the person in front of them.
We have failed the next generation that now sees violence as normal. What can we do?
Educate on how to regulate emotions through relaxation, communication and addressing hurt.
Task-focused group activity to forge bonds.
Meditation to calm the mind and emotions.
Family therapy should be mandatory for children who act out since it indicates the family system is sick.
Limit electronics and encourage communication.
Cut down on violent entertainment.
Establish healthy support groups.
Lastly, what can you do? Be a part of the solution? Take action!
