As schools face grim choices due to budget cuts, all school districts need to evaluate or prioritize personnel and programs. The policy of “rehiring” needs to be examined by lawmakers, district administrators and board members.
Years ago when there was a teacher shortage, retired teachers were hired to fill needed vacancies. Even retired administrators were rehired to become consultants or supervisors, probably at the top of the pay scale. The ending of this “double- dipping” policy could save classroom teachers and support staff positions.
