I read with interest your May 27 front page article (from the Associated Press) on Point Roberts.
Because it’s not mentioned in the article, I’d like to tip off those of my fellow readers who may be interested in a book that is related to the story, but one they may not be familiar with: “The Pig War” by Keith Murray.
The short book (only 84 pages) tells how “The killing of a pig on San Juan Island in 1859 brought England and the United States to the brink of war over the issue of territorial rights there.” The quotation is taken from a sign on the site of the English campground on San Juan Island that briefly mentions the history of the dispute. (The sign itself is pictured in the book.)
For those who have never read it, it may prove to be an eye-opening, informative and entertaining read.
