Six months ago my daughter Jemae’s picture was on the front page of your newspaper. She died from injuries due to a car accident. The other day, on what would have been her 17th birthday, I was pleased to see a group of Monroe High School students on the front page. I want to applaud Megan, Anna, Sandra, Virgil and Maegan for speaking out about racism and diversity. They can make a difference. Jemae made a difference in her short 16 years – for the same cause. She was proud of her Pacific Island heritage. Our family has suffered from the ignorance of racism. Jemae taught us to not accept the ignorance; be proud of who you are. Dear students, my thoughts and prayers are with you.
