I was very touched and impressed when I read the article “Football icon coaches teens” in Saturday’s Herald. Rachel North should be congratulated for taking her eighth-grade report to the next level. Most children would have done their research for this paper on the Internet and completed just what they needed to in order to complete the assignment.
It is commendable that Rachel took the initiative to research fully the subject of her paper, Coach Herman Boone, via previous players and direct e-mail conversations. It is also incredible to me that a 15-year-old took the time to do what was necessary to have the coach come and speak at her school.
For years, I have heard my kids talk about how boring these assemblies are. For her to bring someone so inspiring and also one who many students from different backgrounds can relate to and gain inspiration from is in itself a story. Thank you, Rachel, for showing that students can reach high and achieve their dreams!
