Regarding the Sept. 14 article, “Four from Whidbey in crash”: Barbara Martin, who taught at Meadowdale Middle School, deserves so much more than a single line of recognition. She was a warm, wise and witty teacher who impressed parents and students and her fellow staff members with her concern for students. Her smile, her individual attention to the needs of the kids and her absolute dedication to education needs to be told.
Mrs. Martin had retired from teaching but found herself drawn back to the children she loved and taught so well. Barely two months into a well-earned retirement, she signed up as a substitute and returned to classrooms at Meadowdale Middle on a regular basis. She taught four of my kids, over a period of 20 years, and amazingly, remembered the first of them as well as the last. She surely touched our family, as well as hundred of others. We will miss her.
