Study it, don’t stereotype it

Regarding the potential NASCAR track in Snohomish County: I looked at the cost of building one of the more recent tracks built. Kansas City built a track a few years back, and the original cost was $208 million. The incoming revenue from the track has been at least $170 million a year since then.

There is nothing wrong with building a track in the Northwest. The Northwest has been neglected by NASCAR as long as NASCAR has been around. We do have local tracks, yet some people still do not realize this. I personally drive a racecar out at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe and have been the past four years. I am a third-generation driver. There have been complaints about building a track in the area. Yet, there are no complaints that I have heard of when a developer comes in and builds 50 houses on a couple acres. Races are held usually one weekend out of the year and then they are gone.

As for rednecks driving around in circles, that is anything but NASCAR. NASCAR drivers are fit, and must be able to endure high temperatures in long races. They also must be able to have split second reactions and be in excellent shape to drive a car. Some of the younger generation have actually taken the time to go to college and get degrees. Just take a look at some of the local drivers at local racetracks. We even have Northwest drivers in the Nextel Cup – Greg Biffle from Vancouver and Kasey Kahne from Enumclaw. Before anyone rags on NASCAR, they should actually take the time to look at NASCAR and realize what it is.
