I am one of the volunteers at the Everett Animal Shelter. I was absolutely stunned by the outpouring of generosity from the community (and beyond) when I saw the stacks and stacks of food when I arrived at work recently. It can be a heart-wrenching place to work sometimes, because of the horrific things we see and the hideous way some people treat their animals. But what balances that out to a large degree is the other volunteers I work with, the incredible group of animal control officers and in-house staff who work there, and our compassionate, resourceful director, Bud Wessman.
The love we all have for these homeless animals keeps us going, knowing that we are, like Bud said, doing something good. I would encourage anyone toying with the idea of volunteering (and if you’re not afraid of a little poop) to take that one little step and try it. We all work hard to keep our furry friends clean and happy and help socialize them so they will be more adoptable, and it is enormously rewarding. I just wanted to say thank you to all the people who brought us food and donated money. Who knew all we had to do was ask?
