There is something fundamentally wrong when a judge (U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Steven Rhodes) can refuse to stop the city of Detroit from shutting off water to delinquent customers, saying, “There is no such right or law” (to be provided with water), but not one member of Congress has asked what the cost is going to be — or how we’re going to raise the revenue — for the war we’re now waging in Iraq and Syria. Apparently, the funding is unlimited for endless “engagement” in the Middle East, but under no circumstances can we afford to provide water to our own citizens.
For the cost of a couple cruise missiles or a few fighter sorties, we could pay off the entirety of all the water bills in Detroit. But the residents there need to understand: Nobody has a right to water. Not in this country.
