Now that the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) “Powerhouse” gravel pit is on hold indefinitely (or only temporarily), it is tempting to think we can all relax and not worry about this threat to our way of life. However, that’s just not so. We must make sure that the same people who helped us this time are going to be around again when we need them.
Please support Dave Somers for Snohomish County Council! This battle will be fought at least partly at the county level. Dave has already proven to be our friend.
The city of Sultan faces challenges to the hard-working city council members who have spearheaded this fight. These people and others represent what is best about Sultan, people getting involved for the betterment of the entire community, not for their own financial interest.
City council candidate Dr. Mark Raney has been most visible and needs our support. This struggle would have been impossible without him. His efforts are positively legendary.
Also, council candidate Ron Kraut deserves our support. He was a member of the original panel during the first public meeting with DNR held at the Sultan Middle School. In his opening statement he addressed potential impacts of the gravel pit to our quality of life, including traffic, noise, wildlife, recreation and endangered species.
Please support Cindy Broughton as candidate for city council, and also the candidacies of Jeff Everett and Russ Sumpter, folks who have made a difference, for no personal benefit of their own, other than the continued quality of life for our entire community.
These are good people who have the courage to speak out for what is right and the vision to know what is appropriate for a small town struggling to thrive and grow despite the influences of those whose interest in Sultan is merely for their own personal financial gain.
