We recently received a nicely prepared report from Mayor Frank Anderson and the city council outlining their 2003 work-plan priorities. Their admirable goals for the coming year include public safety, community and economic vitality, optimal city service delivery, community-oriented government and high-quality infrastructure. Nowhere within these five categories or their subparagraphs do we find any mention of a capital project to repair the sewage treatment facilities in north Everett.
As we write this at 3:30 a.m., we have once again been awakened because the stench from the sewer lagoons is so overpowering that we cannot even sleep in our own home. Because of the headaches and nausea this odor causes, we are forced to move into our RV where we can sleep with the air conditioner running and the windows closed. This happens every summer. And although we have complained repeatedly for years, nothing seems to change.
We too are proud of the revitalized Everett so eloquently described in the city’s 2003 report, and of our All-America City status. However, unless something is done quickly to correct this sewer problem, Everett will soon revert to the stinky-city status of pulp mill days.
