I’m writing to comment on the Thursday article regarding gentrifying downtown Everett. I have always lamented the fact the on the weekends downtown Everett has mostly been a ghost town. In the past few years it has slowly started to show signs of life on Saturdays and Sundays. Even on weeknights, too.
The momentum of this effort is timely and already in swing with great places like Zippy’s and Papi’s. Zippy’s is an Internet cafe with couches, computers, movies on the weekends, slide shows, poetry readings and regular live music. I haven’t been to Papi’s yet but I will get there. I have been to Zippy’s and this added bit of diversity and culture to the downtown area is welcome and should be supported if we want more.
We can go to the public hearings that are held on the issue, but the true test is the regular patronizing of smaller businesses like Zippy’s and Papi’s. Or Supee’s and Paraiso too. I enjoy seeing the downtown area coming back to life. And I love the multi-culti choice of eateries. I think of Petula Clark’s famous hit from the ’60s.
