I’m writing to urge voters to support the two levies offered by the Snohomish School District. The district has made great strides since it last asked voters for support in 2000. Its finances are back on sound footing after difficult times in the late 1990s, and it has a board of directors who are committed to working together for the good of the kids. Our schools can truly excel with the financial support provided by these levies.
The school board has offered its unanimous support for both the Programs and Operation Levy and a smaller Transportation Levy. The first levy promises to fund programs that were underfunded during the district’s past hard times. It will put new books and learning materials in the hands of students, who deserve books that are up to date. It will increase the availability of computers and other technology, so our kids can learn the skills they’ll need in the workplace. It will make sure that our buildings are maintained to the standards we expect. And it will also pay for those things that state and federal funding don’t cover, like sports, music, clubs and academic competitions. The Transportation Levy is even simpler. It will fund the purchase of 10 new buses, replacing buses that have 250,000 and even 300,000 miles on them.
Our support of these levies will help continue the positive steps the school district has taken in recent years and make Snohomish a school system we can all be proud of.
