Despite all of the campaign rhetoric about Iraq and the economy, it is unlikely that either will be affected too much regardless of who is elected president on Tuesday.
The makeup of the Supreme Court is another matter, however. With an average tenure of 28 years (based on the last four Justices to retire), the next president will shape crucial legal policies for another generation and a half. Key civil rights are on the line, as is our right to privacy, a free and well diversified media, and even the reliability of our electoral processes.
I am not anti-Republican per se, however I am aghast at the possibility of the current group of callow neo-conservative, far religious right fear mongers getting to shape the social fabric of the country I love. I hope my children and grandchildren will enjoy this country as I have – a place where the ideals of equality, free speech, fair government arrived at by consensus and the inclusion of all races, creeds, and genders are not just words, but the highest ideal to be aspired to, both at home and abroad.
This is too important for mere politics – this is about our very freedoms, and those who treat them with anything less than the utmost regard must not be re-elected.
