I read about the new laws that some state lawmakers wish to impose on our teenage drivers. I wonder who is going to impose new laws for the adult drivers in our state. I am truly concerned for our young drivers and their safety, as I have a 19-year-old daughter myself. I worry about her every time she gets behind the wheel. And not because of her driving skills, but the skills of those around her.
My daughter has been involved in three accidents since receiving her license at 16. Not one of these was due to her driving skills. The first one, she was rear-ended and her car totaled. The second one, she was a passenger in her cousin’s vehicle, which was totaled. These accidents were caused by adults, not teenagers. The third accident occurred around 6:15 p.m. on Dec. 13 in front of the Smokey Point Community Church. She was again rear-ended and her car totaled. It is unclear if this person was a teenager or an adult, as they fled the scene. This person took no responsibility for his or her actions. This concerns me. And if the person was an adult, this concerns me even more.
I wish to thank all the people who stayed to help my daughter and the police. Thank you also to the fire department, EMTs and the Arlington Police Department for their help. I hope that this person, who dramatically changed my daughter’s life that night, will come forward or is found. My family and my daughter also send our prayers to the woman and her young daughter who were also affected by this person in this accident.
We need to keep our children safe. But who are we really keeping them safe from? Not all our teenagers are irresponsible drivers.
