It seems The Herald, in it’s endorsement of Conie Niva for Everett Port Commissioner concentrated on her “name recognition” and “public service,” and missed the point that:the port is a business. And a port commissioner is responsible for providing sound business direction.
If Niva has any business experience, The Herald certainly didn’t mention it.
The Herald did say that Fred Taucher “is also well qualified,” “a business leader” with experience “building strong relationships with counterparts in Asia and Europe” and hopes he will find “ways to work with the port on international trade issues.”
It is also apparent that The Herald overlooked the fact that Niva is strongly supported by labor unions and the Tulalip Tribes – organizations the port and its commissioners will have to “negotiate with” as they try to grow the business of the port.
I’m sure Niva is a nice lady with loads of political savvy and experience, but the port is in the business of going after international business. Fred Taucher is the only candidate with business and international experience.
I would like to have a commissioner who isn’t in the pockets of labor or the Tulalip Tribes. I’m going to look past “name recognition” and “political savvy” and vote for a business person who has run a business.
