Tax cuts have weakened federal response on Covid-19

We have learned that our federal government is totally and tragically unprepared to deal with the current Covid-19 pandemic. Its failures to do what we should have the right to expect it to do continues.

We are living (and dying) with the consequences of the decades-old Republican crusade to shrink the federal government to a size where they could “drown it in the bathtub,” to quote the anti-tax zealot Grover Norquist. The Republicans have inflicted tax cut after tax cut to benefit the wealthy over the rest of us. No wonder the federal government now can’t react to a national crisis in any adequate way.

This crisis lays bare the lie that government is a bad thing. State and local governments are doing the work government should do. The federal government isn’t. Shame on them. Shame on Ronald Reagan for saying that “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are ‘I’m from the federal government, and I’m here to help.’” Today we need the federal government’s help, and it can’t give it. Republican tax cuts are killing us. When will we ever learn?
