My friends and I, all retired, are going to vote for Initiative 912 because we believe the Legislature was short-sighted in passing the motor vehicle fuel tax increase.
Our society is built around the automobile. While attempts have been made to improve public transportation, the reality is that most working people must still drive their auto to work. Therefore, the lower the income, the greater the percentage the new tax represents.
We believe that user taxes should be instituted to pay for new projects. We do not understand why the tolls were removed from the 520 bridge. Poor planning on someone’s part. If those tolls had been left in place and dedicated to the repair and upkeep of the existing bridge and set aside for a new bridge, we would now be in a much better position to fund a new bridge. We note with pleasure that toll booths are being put in place on the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge.
Further, why should the folks in Eastern Washington be made to pay for Western Washington’s projects? The reverse is also true. Let the users foot the cost.
