I was troubled when I read Wednesday’s letter to the editor, “Citizens can lead, say no to tax cuts.” It’s amazing that anyone could believe that the taxpayers of this country are responsible for the public debt run up by career politicians.
Apparently the author believes citizens write and approve the budget rather than the over-indulgent politicians in D.C. Personally, I’m getting tired of politicians going out of their way to spend my money, then telling me I’m selfish or un-American for objecting. If the writer wants to give away his own money that’s his prerogative. But suggesting that I need to “step forward” and pay more to satiate the monetary thirst of pork-barrel politicians is a tad sanctimonious. When I’m shelling out 20 percent of my paycheck to cover debt created by politicians that won’t even pay their own taxes, I think I’ve “stepped forward” enough.
Excess taxation is precisely what is stifling our economy. What this country needs is for politicians to trim the budget and eliminate entitlement spending. Nobody else has a right to my earnings. A right is something we are all equally entitled to that infers no burden on another. It’s not the government’s job to confiscate what I have earned and redistribute it to those who have not earned it. In the world I grew up in, we call that theft.
I would suggest the writer and like-minded people read the Constitution to gain an understanding of what the limited function of government is.
