Taxpayers do have hand in this mess

In response to Sunday’s letter, “Taxpayers didn’t create this mess,” let me talk you down from Fox Land.

Actually, uncaring citizens are partially responsible for our situation.

We continue to vote for these people. Look at this election. Instead of choosing the best people, most voters just wanted all the incumbents out. Most didn’t even vote.

Not the wisest approach.

Remember the famous saying; “We get the government we deserve.”

The author is confused about several things. One, the constitution does grant government the right to tax. Two, entitlements are not the source of the problem. They only account for 20-plus percent of the budget, and SSI and Medicare are self-funded. Was the letter writer not planning on using these when he grew old? The military accounts for 49-plus percent of our budget. Is the writer aware of our empire and its known 700-plus military bases?

I understand the desire to keep everything one earns, it’s a primary instinct from our hunter/gatherer beginnings, but, taxes are what made you a self-made person in society.

Government creates money, roads take you to it, laws and lawyers protect it, EPA kept you alive to enjoy it, etc.

I believe that there are no taxes in Somalia, knock yourself out.
