Regarding the Tuesday article, “Families rally to save Trafton Elementary School in Arlington”:
At Monday night’s school board meeting/public hearing on the possible closure of Trafton Elementary, emotions ran high, but perhaps the saddest moment was when all but two of the 200-plus Trafton families left the board meeting after the public hearing on the Trafton section of the meeting was finished.
They didn’t stick around to support or rally for the five teachers and one counselor from our schools who lost their jobs that night due to budget cuts. I am a firm believer in community activism, and I was impressed by the organization of these parents who came and rallied behind their school, but at the end of the day, it’s the teachers within the building walls that make the greatest difference. If keeping Trafton open costs the district nearly $300,000 more than welcoming those students into our other four buildings, then we must look at whether Arlington is providing equitable education in such a scenario and use that money instead to save the livelihood of teachers within this community.
I encourage the Arlington community to come to future board meetings and support the amazing teachers that this district has hired, who work tirelessly at all buildings to give Arlington’s youth the best education.
