I am writing this letter in this time of uncertainty and fear, to renew faith and hope in our fellow (wo)man. We all need the reassurance that there is still compassion and caring in our world.
I work at Cocoon House, a residence for homeless and abused teens, children who have been “thrown away” by their parents and most of society, and have lost faith in most of the world, especially adults in their lives. We give them a shelter to finish school and get a job, try to teach them living skills so they may go out and live on their own. Mostly, we try to renew their faith in people and show them there are those of us who care about them. Many of them have no safe place to go during the holidays, so we try to make them feel as if they belong somewhere.
There is a group of men and women who work at Boeing, the 747 Community Involvement Team. These people have contributed more than their share of time and money to the teens here at Cocoon, shopping from their wish lists, giving the kids holiday parties, and just coming by on Christmas to hang out with the kids and play games with them.
These people are a very special group. All that they have done is above and beyond what their employers have contributed. They do this on their own in order to enrich our community, and most important, for the kids. Many other organizations and businesses and individuals have contributed to the teens, and it all is appreciated, but sometimes a group comes along that shines. I would like to give them the acknowledgement they deserve.
Thank you, 747 Community Involvement Team, you are bright shining stars and light up the holidays for us all here at Cocoon!
