According to the Port of Edmonds mission statement, one of its missions is to “play a leadership role in ensuring that the waterfront is a vibrant, active centerpiece for the Edmonds community.” Some centerpiece, should our beloved waterfront be dominated by King County’s sewage treatment plant.
Yet at the Port meeting of April 8, four of our five port commissioners readily acquiesced to a request from King County Metro to erect a meteorological tower on port property. The tower would be used to gather information for King County’s Environmental Impact Statement in relation to their proposed sewage plant.
Shame on our port commissioners that they can’t stand shoulder to shoulder with Mayor Gary Haakenson who is doing everything possible to make life difficult for King County. Mayor Haakenson is putting every obstacle in King County’s path in Edmonds’ fight against the sewage plant.
Commissioner Ken Reid argues that to be fair and objective, King County should gather as many facts as possible. But to what purpose? Commissioner Reid fails to understand that the City of Edmonds and the vast majority of the people of Edmonds are opposed to King County siting its sewage plant here on our waterfront. In fact, the whole idea is outrageous. King County must be told to pack its bags and go home.
