Most of us have heard of the saga of the Texas Democrats fleeing the state to avoid a vote on the redistricting plan the Republican majority was attempting to bring to a vote. To understand the complete outrageousness you must start at the beginning.
The state of Texas is required to redistrict every 10 years after a census. They did that last session. The entire Legislature could not agree so it was sent to a redistricting committee to draw the new lines. The committee was made up of four Republicans and one Democrat. An 80 percent Republican majority did the redistricting two years ago.
First, anyone with common sense should be outraged at the convoluted new plan that in one case had one district drawn from Austin with a slim leg extending 300 miles all the way to the Mexican border. Secondly, all conservatives should be outraged because a once-a-decade process was about to be re-done, unnecessarily, at a large cost to the taxpayers of Texas – more “big government waste.” Third, and most importantly, all Americans should be extremely outraged because the Homeland Security department was used to “track down” law abiding citizens.
This is the federal government using its secret police to spy on its own citizens. Yes, secret police. Remember, our newly formed Department of Homeland Security is not subject to the Freedom of Information Act!
