Thanks to our community for its generous support of our recent Girl Scout cookie sales, which are the major source of funding for our organization. Girl Scouts of Western Washington is recognized as a top leadership program for girls, with expansive programming and six camp properties available to all girls. Funding for these comes from cookie sales. What’s really in that box of cookies? Camping, scholarships, skill-building and leadership opportunities.
As leader of a troop that is now in its 11th year, I know that cookies have taken my troop camping, skating, horseback riding, and on many other adventures over the years. A zest for travel led us to start our own business so we could go to the Vancouver Olympics last year. Start-up funds, marketing methods and goal-setting came from years of cookie-selling experience. We have also participated in many Girl Scout programs, such as training, classes and camping. My troop also recognizes the importance of giving back to our community and over the last two years has contributed over 700 hours of community service in support of our local food bank, Chamber of Commerce, schools and Senior Center.
I recently met a life-time Girl Scout who is 85 years old. Hers was one of the first troops to sell cookies when the program first began. She said, “When we first started the cookie program, we were not really selling them. They were a thank-you gift for donating to Girl Scouts, and when people made a purchase, we said, ‘Thank you for donating to Girl Scouts.'” I would like to echo that sentiment, and again thank our community for its support of the many programs for girls offered by Girl Scouts of Western Washington, made possible by cookie purchases.
