On June 28, the Camano Island Library Friends held their first “Books &Bake Sale” in conjunction with the first anniversary of the library.
The event was a great success. More than 2,000 books were generously donated by the community. A unique feature of the sale included a specially prepared selection of homemade baked goods. Our yummy thanks to all who contributed those delicious baked goods.
Special thanks to Mary Lou Olson from the Stanwood Library, who helped with instructive guidance and a generous start-up of books, and Windemere Real Estate of Camano, which provided space to store and sort the books as well as tables for the sale. Various stores allowed us to place boxes for book contributions: Camano Plaza’s IGA, Haggan, QFC, and Tyee’s grocery. Our apologies to the store staff who, more than once, tripped over boxes spilling over with book donations from our generous community.
Our local newspapers were very supportive. Stanwood/Camano News and The Herald both ran announcements for the sale. These announcements, combined with mention by columnist Kristi O’Harran of The Herald, undoubtedly accounts for the large turnout.
Special thanks to the Friends president, Rebecca Wietzke, whose effective leadership ensured that everything went smoothly. David Menard, our Camano Island librarian, cheerfully responded to our many cries for help. And he did all this while conducting his usual busy work at the library and putting together the anniversary celebrations.
Most important, our thanks to Nancy Patton, the Sno-Isle volunteer program administrator who serves as liaison for the various Friends groups. It is through her knowledge and support that all of those who enjoy the various libraries in the Sno-Isle region are inspired to do more and better for each of our communities.
