I am writing with deep gratitude to the City of Everett and Mayor Cassie Franklin for the support provided to the March for Our Lives and rally on March 24 in downtown Everett, one of hundreds of marches across the country focusing on ending gun violence.
I was heartened by the throngs who turned out to march, by the peaceful and friendly crowd, and most especially by the Everett Police Department officers, who blocked downtown intersections and lanes for the marchers and kept everyone safe. They were helpful and friendly and it was a pleasure to thank each of them as we passed by.
Dozens of onlookers and motorists witnessing the march honked and shouted their support. We only encountered a few instances of name-calling and rude gestures. I believe the time has come for people to come together to end gun violence. Gun owners and non-gun owners can agree, I think, that gun violence threatens everyone and we must address this issue together. Hope and inspiration were evident in Everett on Saturday. We can do this!
