Regarding the Jan. 17 sports article, “Confessions of a golf ball thief”:
My fairway drive landed close to the green and near the rough — suddenly a kid bolted out of the brush, scooped up my ball and quickly was gone — despite the yelling of me and my son Ed. As we preceded on, there was a couple of boys selling golf balls, “Want to buy a golf ball?” I said, “No, but I’ll take the Titleist that just swiped off the fairway.”
The balls were displayed in an egg carton, and there was my Titleist, which I picked up — the kid had a sickly little guilty grin on his face — caught! Wow.
We’ve laughed many times over the years as we’ve told the story, but never thought I would ever read the “True confessions of the thief.” I’m 93 years old now and the incidents Gary Nelson relates to be the 1960s coincides just as I remember it. Honest confession is good for the soul — you little scamp!
