As a novice kayaker (second season), I decided to try kayaking around Jetty Island last month. This proved successful on several previous occasions. I wanted to try something a bit more challenging so I looked at a guide and found Gedney Island (directly west with regard to Jetty Island) was nearby.
Inexperience and over-confidence are a poor combination anytime and the sea is unforgiving. I did not realize that Gedney Island was approximately 4 nautical miles away. It took three hours just to reach Gedney Island and by then the tide was sweeping back out. I paddled for two more hours only to be stranded at the Northern tip of Jetty Island. I cannot effectively communicate the feelings of helplessness and panic I experienced. At noon, the tide was not just low, it was non-existent. There literally was no water around me. I tried to get out and go to shore (some 300 yards away) but the sand was the consistency of mud and I was afraid of getting into a worse situation.
As I sat there trying not to panic, I called several friends who gave me excellent advice: call 911. My problem was that I had been paddling aggressively for over five hours and now I was getting cold.
I called 911 and spoke to a number of people — Dispatcher Brent, who got me in touch with the Coast Guard, and Officer Jim and Officer Glen, who facilitated my rescue with the Snohomish County Volunteer Search & Rescue. At approximately 3 p.m., Search & Rescue volunteers came on hovercrafts and not only rescued me but also my kayak. I have never been so grateful in all my life. These brave men risked their lives to save me. They were very professional and made sure I had a lifejacket and earplugs as the hovercrafts were very loud. We made it back to the Port of Everett and I thanked them all for saving me. Officer Glen helped me load up my kayak, and shivering and exhausted I made my way home.
I again reflect on the selfless and heroic actions of the men who helped me when I really needed it the most. I want them to know that I appreciate and will be forever grateful for their help. Thank you all with utmost sincerity.
And finally, I will be better prepared on my next kayaking adventure.
