Thanks to garage sale volunteers for 10 years of success

My wife and I very much enjoyed reading Julie Muhlstein’s article about the Mother of All Garage Sales Aug. 3 (“Antiques to tamales, up for grabs at mother of all sales,” The Herald, July 31).

We’re delighted that the event has celebrated its 10th year.

Some folks have asked about how we came up with the name. It was an irreverent nod to Saddam Hussein who in Januyary of 1991 proclaimed that the First Gulf War was going to be “The Mother of All Battles.”

Although I’ve often been credited with initiating the annual garage sale, the truth is it was an idea that had been suggested as a possible event years before I was elected NW Neighborhood Association chairperson.

Thanks to a large group of wonderful volunteers (including Steve Jensen, Paula and Bob Adrian, John Cronan, Chuck Howard and Russ Kassellmann) we delivered yard signs and balloons to participants and simply hoped folks would show up, and boy, did they!

Even many of the neighborhood kids made over $100 just selling cookies and lemonade that first year!

Folks like neighborhood leaders Shelley Sutton and Kari Quaas and their team of do-gooders have done a terrific job building on our initial success.

It never occurred to us that various local charities and businesses would begin to both help sponsor and participate in the garage sale. How cool is that?

If you are having a sale later this summer, please consider making a donation to the Northwest Neighborhood Association, info@northwesteverett.org. it’s the right thing to do.
