Things are looking mighty competitive in the news today. Here’s a roundup of some of the winners and losers:
Winner: The Seahawks, who won their first game, routing the Rams 37-13 and at least temporarily alleviating the fears of downtrodden Seattle sports fans that they’d have to become aficionados of curling.
Loser: Summer, which will be elbowed out by autumn today at 8:44 a.m. Of course, judging by the weather over the past few days, summer is putting up even less of a fight than the Rams did.
Winner: “Mad Men,” a show about advertising executives in the 1960s, is the first basic-cable series to win the best drama Emmy. If its success should dwindle, though, the name could always be reused for a flick about present-day investment bankers.
Loser: U.S. taxpayers, who will not be getting a bailout from the government, unlike failing financial institutions, business editor Mike Benbow writes. But don’t despair. Now that it’s autumn, you might be one of the lucky people to discover you accidentally left $10 in your pocket when you hung your jacket up for the summer.
