The day the music died

Just in time: The Snohomish County Council has established design standards for new homes built in the unincorporated areas of the county, addressing building height, the size of yards and open space.

The standards should come in handy in about five years, when someone is actually building a new home.

Herald writer Ron Ramey reminisces about a fellow product of Lubbock, Texas: pioneer rocker Buddy Holly, who died in a plane crash 50 years ago this week.

With respect to Don McLean, Feb. 3, 1959, was not the day the music died. That happened in the late 1970s, when thanks to Hollywood the name “Buddy Holly” became associated with the name “Gary Busey.”

If you’re a big Barbra Streisand fan, you’ll want to know that her 1983 epic, “Yentl,” will finally be released on DVD Tuesday (Page D2).

The two-disc “Director’s (read: Barbra’s) Cut” includes deleted scenes and commentary by Streisand herself, but alas, no commemorative plate.
