Regarding Jack McClurg’s Jan. 25 letter to the editor, “NASCAR possibilities: The noise would ruin quality of life”: I do not think he realizes the financial impact a race weekend would do for this county.
In October we spent four days in Phoenix for the races. We found a tour for four people for $2,400. This got us four nights of lodging, tickets and transportation to two races, plus one lunch. We spent $800 on airfare and $300 on a rental car. Plus, we spent money on tickets to see races and on food.
At the track, all the race teams have semi-trailers with anything your heart desires with their drivers name on it. Most of it was pricey, but isn’t that what this trip is all about? Concession stands are run by school and service clubs in the area. One student said the band at her school makes in excess of $40,000 on this particular weekend. Just think, no more candy, cookie dough or magazine sales. People living near the track rent out their yards for parking.
If Mr. McClurg doesn’t want the noise, he can go away that weekend. Let us spend our money in our own neighbor hood and he can reap the benefits.
